TP Area

The excavations on the top of the southern eminence of the East Mound was carried out in the years 2001-2008 in an area known as the Team Poznań (TP) Area. It was conducted by a joint expedition of Adam Mickiewicz University of Poznań and University of Gdańsk, and directed by Lech Czerniak and Arkadiusz Marciniak from Institute of Archaeology (formerly Istitute of Prehistory). This work revealed significant change in different domains of the local community, as compared to the pattern characterizing the period that may be labelled classic Çatalhöyük. These comprised, among other things, settlement layout, house architecture, burial practices, human-animal relations, lithics procurement and technology, and pottery production and use. The excavated levels were named by letters, starting from TP-M, the oldest Neolithic level, to TP-R, marking the final Neolithic sequence. Thanks to this work we know that the mound was finally abandoned in the first decades of the 6th millennium cal BC.

The excavations were carried out in the trench 10 by 10 meters located on top of the East Mound, next to the area excavated by James Mellaart in the 1960s. Additionally, the work continued in an extension trench of 10 by 5 meters which was opened up and is situated directly to the east of Mellaart's Area A.

The decision to open up a trench in this particular part of the east mound was preceded by the work conducted by a team supervised by Shahina Farid in the 2000 season. It used a surface scraping as well as partial excavation of colluvial deposits and contained are measured 25 meters x 30 meters. After a depth of ca. 30 cm no Neolithic structures have been traced here. Few deposits were excavated in spits and revealed existence of few burials. The bodies were in supine and extended positions located within mudbrick lined burial cuts. As a result of this work, it was decided to locate a trench immediately to the east of Mellaart's Area A, where Levels I and II had been excavated. The decision was also supported by study of Mellaart's plans of Level I and II.

Polish research team had interdisciplinary character: it included, apart of archaeologists, members of other fields such as botanists or anthropology. Integral part of the team have been students from Institute of Archaeology (mainly Oriental and Antique Studies).
